Closer to a print than a poster, this piece was the second poster commissioned from Lautrec by Arthur Hac, the manager of the newspaper La DepĂȘche de Toulouse<>. Designed to announce a serialized novel, Lautrec creates a mysterious, nocturnal scene in which he demonstrates his astounding lithographic abilities with crachis<>, and projected colored droplets. "The impressions of the first state, before lettering, were probably intended for poster collectors." (Adriani p. 203). Delteil 357 I, Adriani 140 I, Wittrock P 19 A.
